What EFDA registration means when you buy medical equipment in Ethiopia

Buying medical equipment is not only a question of price and specification. In Ethiopia, every imported device must be traceable to a registered importer and an approved manufacturer, and the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) is the body that oversees this.

What registration actually covers

Registration is a chain, not a single certificate. It links the manufacturer, the device model, the importer and the final installation.

• The manufacturer must hold a recognised quality certification for the device class.
• The importer must be registered with EFDA and licensed for the device category.
• Each consignment must clear with matching invoices, certificates of origin and conformity documents.
• Installation and user training must be documented for equipment that requires commissioning.

Why it matters for your facility

Unregistered equipment can be held at customs, refused during facility inspection, or left without spare parts and service when it fails. Hospitals that buy through unregistered channels often pay twice — once for the machine and again for the downtime.
