Choosing an ultrasound machine for a private clinic: five practical questions

21 August 2026 5 min read

Portable or trolley? How many probes? What happens when the battery dies? A short, honest checklist based on the questions our clients ask most.

Ultrasound is usually the first serious imaging purchase a private clinic makes, and it is the one most often over-specified. These are the five questions we walk through with clients before quoting.

1. What examinations will it actually perform?

Obstetric and abdominal scanning, small-parts imaging and cardiac work place very different demands on a machine. A clinic doing routine antenatal and abdominal scans does not need a cardiology-grade platform — and paying for one usually means compromising elsewhere, such as on probes.

2. How many probes, and which ones?

The probe determines image quality far more than the console does. A convex probe plus a linear probe covers most general practice. Add an endocavity probe only if that service is genuinely planned. Budget for probes as part of the purchase, not as an afterthought.

3. Portable or trolley-mounted?

Portable units suit clinics with more than one consulting room, outreach work or unstable power. Trolley systems give better ergonomics and screen size for a fixed imaging room with steady throughput.

4. What is the power and backup situation?

Power interruption is the most common cause of avoidable downtime we see. Confirm battery runtime for portable units, and plan a stabiliser or UPS for fixed installations. Our electrical division can specify this alongside the equipment.

5. Who services it, and how quickly?

Ask where the nearest trained engineer is, what the expected response time is, and whether consumables such as gel, paper and probe covers are locally available. We install, train your operators and support the equipment after handover.

Send us your case mix and monthly volumes and we will recommend a configuration and issue a quotation.
